Pandora becomes more beautiful and social

The site does away with Flash, gets a new HTML 5 design and adds new social networking features. How cool is that!

Pandora just switched from Flash to HTML5. Pandora will show its new face to Pandora One customers first, and then to everyone else in the coming weeks.

Pandora decided to go with the new design because Flash kept slowing users down, even as the company sped things up on the back end.

With the new site, the music bar stays visible even as you navigate the site, meaning you can discover new music without interrupting the currently playing song. The “back” button on your browser works and you can share URLs of the page you are on.

So it is a completely revamped way of finding and, soon, sharing music. Jumping on the social music bandwagon with platforms like Rdio and Last.fm, Pandora will give you a profile to keep track of your music and followers. While the control bar hovering over the action plays your favorite station, you can also explore an artist's discography and biography or see what a friend is listening to. And when you want to change stations, the search bar can now make personalized suggestions to keep from making random genre switches.

The site itself is stunning, yet familiar. “We wanted the experience to be completely fresh. But we didn’t want to force our listeners to completely re-learn the Pandora experience,” says the head of product and CTO, Tom Conrad, noting that while things look much cleaner, the same basic layout remains largely intact.
