Too many faces and fewer books- this may well be the definition of Facebook for the students using the social networking site. But Facebook may not be bad for students after all.

Does using Facebook hurt a student’s academic performance in school? The Debate has been ongoing ever since the social networking site hit the mainstream.

A recent study on college students, the biggest ever of its kind challenges the popular idea that that Facebook affects students negatively. The study finds that Facebook use itself isn’t a problem – it all depends on how it is used.

Some of the key points mentioned in one of the most well documented Facebook studies:

  • 92% of students use Facebook.
  • The average student visits Facebook 6 times each day.
  • The average students spends 106 minutes (1 hour and 46 minutes) using Facebook daily.
  • Students that post links and check up on friends receive higher marks than students who tend to only post status updates.

Using the social network only hurts the grades if the student goes totally overboard. If they just casually use Facebook, it really doesn’t have much of an effect on their grades. This could be said for just about anything else.
