Instagram, the immensely popular iPhone photography app that gives retro look to the images announced that it’s finally developing an app for Android.
The iPhone Photo App which lets people apply various special-effects filters to photos and share them with their friends, has a notable 50 million users so far on iOS.
“We have two people working on Android now,” Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram said at LeWeb in Paris. “I’m excited to be able to see our numbers today nearly double.”
However Systrom didn’t give a release date fort Android.
Instagram originally launched on the iPhone because it was the phone used by Instagram's founders. But Systrom credits the camera on the iPhone 4 with helping drive Instagram's success.
"The screen and the camera on the iPhone 4 was really a turning point. It was really disruptive. Somebody had to come along and take advantage of that disruption," he said.
Instagram rolled out a major update when it launched version 2.0 of the app in September which brought live filters, instant tilt-shift, high-resolution photos and a speedier experience.
Android owning the largest portion of the smartphone market at the moment could definitely increase Instagram’s popularity and overall reach.
Instagram also has plans to introduce advertising to monetize its app, which is currently supported by investments.
“Obviously, we didn’t start a business to not make money,” Systrom says. “Our focus now is on growing the network. You really need to build up the network, or no advertisers care.”
