The trusted and the much reputed, health insurer, WellPoint had to contact 470,000 of its customers. The reason though far from health issues did shake up the trust for the insurer a bit. A security glitch in the online system, which is effectively and widely used to gather personal information about the “ insured” have let out personal details which include credit card information, medical records and other personal particulars which aren’t intended to make public by the Insurance Company.
The possible breach has affected only individual insurance customers and could not leak information on group coverage or people who bought Medicare Advantage insurance.
The insurer said that “The cause of the problem transpired because of an online program used to track a current application. However, the glitch was fixed back in March.” Cynthia Sanders, a spokeswoman for WellPoint said that “They had contacted their customers and tried to alleviate their fears that this incident was handled swiftly and that tougher security measures are now in place. The problem only came to light when a customer found that she could gain access to personal customer information on the website.”
Benevolently, WellPoint said that they would offer free credit monitoring for one-year.
