Apple has the next generation of its iPad in production, according to a Wall Street Journal report that apparently confirms many of the rumors that have been circulating for the past couple of months.

The original iPad has been a smash hit for Apple, to the tune of 14.8 million units shipped in less than a year. IPad sales currently constitute 17 percent of Apple's overall revenue, a pretty amazing figure.

When Steve Jobs came back to Apple after his previous medical leave, he made it clear that he was doing so because his grand-vision project, the iPad, hadn’t yet been accomplished.

In fact, after the iPad was launched, he revealed that Apple been working on it for longer than it had been working on the iPhone, and had merely released the iPhone first because of existing consumer demand for smartphones.

And while Jobs is now gone again from the company for new medical reasons, he was there for enough of the second generation iPad development cycle. In fact, the iPad 2 is probably what he wanted the iPad 1 to be.

Possible Updates in iPad 2

• The company’s newest tablet will be “thinner and lighter than the first model,” unnamed sources told the Wall Street Journal Feb. 9. If the account is accurate, the   next iPad will also include a front-facing camera for video conferencing, more memory, “and a more powerful graphics processor.”

• James Holland, editor of tech website electricpig.co.uk, said: "Smaller, lighter, more memory and a camera will all help massively, but the real surprises will come in the software it runs.
"Don't be surprised if their best enhancements aren't in the hardware, but rather in what that hardware can do."

• The new model will reportedly be sold through current partners AT&T and Verizon Wireless--suggesting it might be dual mode for both GSM and CDMA networks but not Sprint Nextel Corp. or T-Mobile USA in the U.S., according to some of the people familiar with the matter.
With this Apple may be readying a "world iPad" which enables it to get online anywhere in the world.

• Boy Genius Report said a source had told it that Apple has employees testing iPads with no home buttons, but one can’t bet on it.

The new iPad is expected by Apple watchers to debut in the next couple of months at a similar price range as the current iPad, though exact details couldn't be learned. It’s price range could be anywhere between $499 - $829 depending on whether users want 3G or just Wi-Fi capability.

On 7 February 2011, Elton John, said on BBC Breakfast that he is looking forward to buying an iPad 2 in April so he can make video calls using Skype. Did he just reveal the iPad 2 release time or has he been hearing the same rumours that we have?

Given that the original iPad went on sale in April, it is a high possibility that Apple would release the second version of the tablet around the same time a year later.
