 Blackberry: Message not deciphered

Blackberry has gained immense popularity in India with about a million customers in India. There have been issues lately with security concerns associated with the BlackBerry services. The government has planned to give Blackberry maker, a 15 days RIM to ensure that the e-mail service and other data services that are provided to the consumers comply with the ‘formats that can be read by security and intelligence agencies’. Such a development in the telecom scenario between the gadget makers, service provider and the Government of India has again come to a stand-off.

Senior officials associated with key security agencies are of the opinion that the continuation of BlackBerry services without complying with the desired format poses a great threat to the country. GK Pillai , the home secretary chaired the meeting which was attended by representatives of the home ministry, Department of Telecom, intelligence agencies and the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).

The latest development as reported by the security agencies point out that it has again become difficult to intercept or decipher messages sent through BlackBerry phones, which technically use codes with an encryption of 256 bits, which jumbles the emails sent from a BlackBerry device and present it in a readable format to the recipient of the message.
