BROOKLYN, NY--(Marketwire - June 18, 2012) - The Brooklyn Health Information Exchange (BHIX), a Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) serving organizations that represent the continuum of care across Brooklyn and beyond, announced today that it is the first New York City RHIO to sign-on to support the New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC) in its efforts to integrate the downstate region, and ultimately the entire state, into a unified network for healthcare records.
BHIX Executive Director Irene Koch said, "BHIX deployed and enhanced a flexible and scalable health information exchange platform with its vendor-partners InterSystems Corporation, J2 Interactive, IBM Initiate, and Dell." BHIX's robust infrastructure will now be used as a key reference implementation for NYeC initiatives. "It makes sense for everyone to come together to create efficiencies and expand connectivity," Koch added.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with BHIX," said David Whitlinger, Executive Director of NYeC. "Together we'll move forward the Statewide Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY) and improve healthcare for New Yorkers."
BHIX will be among the first to benefit from the interoperable services provided by NYeC, linking multiple providers and payers in New York City and supporting state-wide data exchange. "This is especially important to our stakeholders, since Brooklyn residents receive care throughout the downstate region. Expanding access to health data while reducing infrastructure costs will enhance BHIX's value to the organizations and population we serve," Koch said.
"We see this as the imperative next step in the evolution of health information exchange and its ability to support comprehensive care coordination for patients statewide," said Pamela Brier, BHIX Board Chair and President of Maimonides Medical Center. "The health information exchange partnership created through NYeC will encourage valuable collaboration and knowledge sharing among regional partners across the State. We are pleased that BHIX has been in the forefront of health information exchange in our region. We look forward to having it continue to play a valuable role in the SHIN-NY."
BHIX will continue to develop special projects in support of its participating organizations while assisting NYeC in its ramp-up of the SHIN-NY and growing the market for health information exchange. "We have supported BHIX in its efforts to create a health information exchange that serves Brooklyn patients. In return, BHIX has helped us think strategically about how health information exchange can be implemented in innovative and resourceful ways, improving both efficiency and outcomes," said Eli Feldman, President/CEO of the Metropolitan Jewish Health System. "We are delighted with this ground-breaking partnership and applaud the work of BHIX, NYeC and the vision of the New York State Department of Health."
