Often when you’re in a book store, you’ll browse through a few pages of a book, read it and decide whether or not you want to purchase. Of course, when books became a popular online consumer item, this used to be a problem. There was no way to test out that first chapter and decide if it really was worth buying.

However, new technology has stepped in and saved the day, and according to a recent study, done more for books than perhaps any in-store sampling has ever done. Companies like Libre Digital are providing free sample book chapters from some of the world’s top publishers, authors, retailers and social networking sites. Libre Digital alone has powered 500 million page views of sample book chapters.

“We know that allowing readers to preview book chapters before buying has a positive impact on both print and eBook sales,” said Russell P. Reeder, President and CEO of LibreDigital, Inc. “In the case of one well-known book publisher, one in three people who browsed decided to purchase the book online. As a result, leading publishers are increasing their use of online previews when planning promotional campaigns for both new and existing book titles.”

Libre Digital, which works with top publishers such as HarperCollins Publishers, Hachette Book Group, Simon & Schuster and Wiley, has found book sampling has had a positive affect on all age groups. Companies like Libre Digital ensure that the best part of a book to sample is sampled, and not just a random chapter. With the rise of e-readers, it’ll be interesting to see the continued impact of companies like Libre Digital.
